Who Was Alan Rickman?

Alan Rickman was an English actor, screenwriter and director, who appeared as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.

Rickman attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).

He began his acting career by featuring in theatre productions, as far back as 1985.

He appeared in Broadway in 1987, he was nominated for a Tony Award.

Rickman made his screen debut in 1988, when he played the role of a German terrorist leader Hans Gruber in the movie Die Hard.

He went ahead to star in other films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), Truly, Madly, Deeply (1991), An Awfully Big Adventure (1995), Sense and Sensibility (1995), and Éamon de Valera in Michael Collins (1996).

Rickman also played comic roles in Dogma (1999), Galaxy Quest (1999), and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005).

Between 2001 and 2011, Rickman appeared in the Harry Potter series, Love Actually (2003), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Eye in the Sky (2015), and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).

While he was alive, the award-winning actor received the BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, but he never got nominated for an Oscar.

Rickman died on 14 January 2016, at age 69, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
