American writer Warren McClamroch Hoge was born on April 13, 1941. The New York Times has been his primary employer for most of his long career.
James F. Hoge, Sr. (1901–1972) and Virginia McClamroch are the parents of Hoge. James F. Hoge, Jr., his older brother, was the previous editor of Foreign Affairs, a magazine produced by the Council on Foreign Relations. He was born in 1935. Barbara Hoge Daine, the eldest of the Hoge siblings, passed away in 2001. Virginia Howe Hoge is the eldest sibling.

Hoge is a Yale University and Trinity School graduate. At George Washington University, he also pursued graduate studies. In addition to serving in the Army Reserve from 1965 to 1970, he joined the American Army in 1964.
