His music career began as a teenager with his first single, Love Fat Woman, released under the alias Adi Banton. Kartel rose to prominence in 2003, following a string of hits in Jamaica that culminated in a pre-planned on-stage clash with Ninjaman at the annual dancehall festival ‘Sting’ in Kartel’s hometown of Portmore, Jamaica, which escalated to violence and resulted in Kartel and Ninjaman publicly apologising to the event’s organisers.
Vybz Kartel’s music often explores themes such as street life, love, social issues, and sexuality, and he has been known for pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in dancehall music.
