Gallinari was born on August 8, 1988, in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Italy to Vittorio Gallinari and Marilisa Gallinari.
He began playing basketball professionally in 2004.

After spending his first four years as a professional in Italy, Gallinari was drafted sixth overall in the 2008 NBA draft by the New York Knicks.
