An infamous real-life “Goodfellas” mobster who is thought to have been responsible for one of the largest heists to ever occur on US soil has passed away at the age of 86.

Sources claim that the capo of the Bonanno crime family, Vincent “Vinny” Asaro, passed away on Saturday. His cause of death is unknown, but according to his family, a funeral service will be held on Friday at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Queens, New York.

Asaro was allegedly a participant in the notorious Lufthansa heist at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City, which was later portrayed in the film Goodfellas. Asaro was indicted on federal racketeering charges relating to the heist after the FBI finally arrested him and other suspects in 2014.

Jerome Asaro is the son of Vincent Asaro. Asaro would assist Jerome Asaro in taking over his crew and assimilating into the Bonanno family. Asaro and his son, however, fell out later in life and ceased to communicate. Asaro was detained by the FBI on January 23, 2014, and he was charged with federal racketeering in connection with the 1978 Lufthansa robbery.
