Russo is an American of Italian descent, as his maternal grandfather was Sicilian. Russo grew up in Farmingville, New York, and earned a journalism degree from the University of Southern Indiana.

He served as an associate sports editor and eventually as editor-in-chief for the campus newspaper The Shield. Russo began his pro wrestling career at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, where he trained under Johnny Rodz.

From 1992 to 1993, Russo produced his own local radio show called Vicious Vincent’s World of Wrestling, which aired on Sunday nights on WGBB in Freeport, New York. The show aired for precisely one year, with the final episode commemorating the one-year anniversary.

Vince Russo is well-known for his work as a creative director for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA, now Impact Wrestling).

Russo led the WWF’s creative department during the famous Attitude Era, when the business gained record-breaking television ratings. He has also published a number of books.

His first book, “Forgiven: One Man’s Journey from Self-Glorification to Sanctification,” was published in 2000 and is an autobiography. In 2010, he published his second book, “Rope Opera: How WCW Killed Vince Russo.”
