Young Vernon was out on a bike ride in Cincinnati, Ohio, on a fateful June 6, 1955, when he was tragically struck by a speeding automobile. This incident left the young talent with severe head injuries. His brothers Ronald and O’Kelly were especially affected by the tragedy’s profundity, as were the rest of his family.
