Valerie Bertinelli is of mixed descent (Italian descent and English descent. She was raised alongside three brothers: Drew Bertinelli, Patrick Bertinelli, Mark Bertinelli, and David Bertinelli. She lost her elder brother, Mark from accidental poisoning at 17 months before her birth.

Valerie Bertinelli studied acting at the Tami Lynn School of Artists and schooled at Granada Hills High School. Growing up, Valerie Bertinelli has lived in Claymont, Delaware; Clarkston, Michigan; Shreveport, Louisiana; Oklahoma City as well as the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles, California.
