Val Edward Kilmer was born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California, United States. His mother Gladys Swanette Ekstadt was of Swedish descent and his father Eugene Dorris Kilmer was an aerospace equipment distributor and real estate developer.

Val Kilmer had two siblings including Mark Kilmer and Wesley Kilmer. His younger brother Wesley, who had epilepsy, drowned in a jacuzzi at age 15. He lost his father in 1993. His parents had earlier divorced in 1968 when he was 8 years old.

Val Kilmer went to Chatsworth High School. He rose to popularity for his roles in the movies, Top Secret! (1984), Real Genius (1985), Top Gun (1986) and Willow (1988). He has also starred in The Doors (1991), True Romance (1993), Tombstone (1993), The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), Wonderland (2003), Alexander (2004), Batman Forever (1995), and The Saint (1997). 

Val Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in January 2015. He reported in 2020 that he had been cancer free for four years.
