The names of Tyre Nicols’s parents are unknown. However, after his death, his family hired an attorney, Ben Crump for the case.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Nichols was originally stopped on January 7, for reckless driving. On January 7, District Attorney, Steve Mulroy contacted the TBI to look at allegations regarding excessive use of force during the arrest.

On January 20, the MPD announced that the five officers involved, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr, and Justin Smith would be fired. The five officers are all black.
Protests were held in response to Nichols’s death.
