Tyre Nichols Obituary

Tyre Nicols is an African American man who died on January 10, 2023, three days after a traffic stop by officers from the Memphis Police Department.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Nichols was originally stopped on January 7, for reckless driving. On January 7, District Attorney, Steve Mulroy contacted the TBI to look at allegations regarding excessive use of force during the arrest.

On January 20, the MPD announced that the five officers involved, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr, and Justin Smith would be fired. The five officers are all black.

Nichols’s family hired attorney Ben Crump. Protests were held in response to Nichols’s death.
