Twilight: Why can’t Edward read Bella’s mind? Why was Edward hard to sleep with Bella?

Although it is known that in the Twilight Saga movie series, Edward has the ability to read minds, he is not able to read Bella’s mind.

Edward can’t read Bella’s mind because Bella possesses a unique ability to shield her thoughts and feelings from telepathic vampires.

Edward has a hard time sleeping with Bella because he is a vampire and has to resist the urge to drink her blood for his sustenance. He struggles with the idea of losing control and hurting Bella.
