Tucupita Marcano, once a rising star in Major League Baseball (MLB), has now faced a lifetime ban from the sport for betting on games, including those of his own team.

The Padres infielder’s career took a dramatic turn as he was officially banned from MLB for life on Tuesday, June 4 2024 after admitting to betting on 25 Pirates games while he was part of the team last season.

Marcano, who was on the injured list during the time of his betting activity, did not participate in any of the games he wagered on and failed to win any of the bets.

According to the league, Marcano placed a total of 387 bets between 2022 and 2023, with 231 of them related to MLB. His total wagers amounted to $150,000, with over $87,000 placed on MLB-related bets, primarily parlays, of which he won just 4.3 percent.

In contrast, four other players, including A’s pitcher Michael Kelly, Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, Padres pitcher Jay Groome, and Phillies infielder Jose Rodriguez, received one-year suspensions for betting on teams other than their own.

Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the game in a statement, stating, “The longstanding prohibition against betting on Major League Baseball games by those in the sport has been a bedrock principle for over a century.”

Marcano, aged 24, who was projected to have earned $2.7 million in his baseball career, has now faced a sudden end to his professional journey. With a career .217 average and .589 OPS in 149 games, Marcano’s promising career has come to an abrupt halt.

Signed as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 2016 by the Padres, Marcano was later traded to the Pirates in 2021. His last big-league appearance was in July 2023, when he suffered an ACL tear while running the bases.

The Pirates expressed their disappointment in Marcano’s actions in a statement, stating, “We are extremely disappointed in Tucupita’s actions and are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s ruling.”
