Trudy Haynes an Emmy Award-winning journalist passed away on Tuesday, June 7 morning at age 95.

Trudy Haynes was born in New York City, New York, on November 23, 1926. She became the nation’s first African American TV weather reporter for WXYZ-TV in Detroit in 1963, and the first African American TV news reporter for KYW-TV (now CBS-3) in Philadelphia two years later.

She was accepted to Howard University in 1943 and graduated in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology.

Haynes became the first Black TV reporter in Philadelphia when she joined Eyewitness News in 1965. She was a courageous lady who fought discrimination and sexism at the time. Despite the challenges, she worked hard to achieve her objectives and earned their respect.

She received numerous awards over her 33-year tenure at KYW-TV, including an Emmy Award and two Lifetime Achievement Awards.
