He was named after quarterback Troy Aikman because his father was a high school quarterback who walked on at Arizona State University.  Terry grew up in the Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch with his younger brother Trent.

Terry began skating at the age of four and was skating with an older age group by the age of six. He played college hockey for the University of Denver Pioneers in the NCAA before turning professional.
