The victims, Dominic Abu, aged 15, and Enoch Ogo, aged 16, both students of the Abisco M/A Basic School, tragically met their fate on Monday, April 8, 2024.
According to reports, the students were returning home from school when the incident occurred. It is believed that one of the students fell into the pit while attempting to rescue the other.
Following the incident, the bodies of the two students were retrieved from the pit. The uncovered galamsey site has raised concerns among residents due to the repeated fatalities recorded in the area.

Notably, about two years ago, a final year student of the St. Andrews Senior School also fell into the pit while attempting to use a shortcut route from Abesewa to Barrier, which was flooded at the time.
Expressing concern over the recurring deaths at the site, Ernest Arkon, the Assembly member for Compound Electoral Area, lamented the situation.
He urged the Municipal Chief Executive and Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira East to take immediate action to reclaim the land.
Residents have given them a maximum of four months to address the issue; otherwise, a massive demonstration will be organized against them.
