Toon Greebe: Darts star who beat Michael van Gerwen before double amputation dies aged 35

Dutch darts prodigy Toon Greebe passed away on October 16, 2023, at the tender age of 35. Greebe’s untimely demise follows a long and courageous battle with severe health issues.

Greebe made headlines not only for his darting prowess but also for his remarkable victories over world champions, including the illustrious Michael van Gerwen and the 2014 BDO World Championship winner, Stephen Bunting.

Greebe’s journey in the world of professional darts spanned 16 incredible years, during which he graced the stages of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), the World Darts Federation (WDF), and the now-defunct British Darts Organisation (BDO).

Although he never clinched a major championship title, his astonishing victories over some of the sport’s giants are forever etched in the memory of darts enthusiasts worldwide.

Greebe’s unique achievement included defeating his close friend and darts sensation, Michael van Gerwen. That monumental win against van Gerwen was not just a victory; it was a testament to his unwavering spirit and exceptional skill.

Additionally, Greebe twice earned a place at the prestigious PDC World Championship, a tournament that gathers the crème de la crème of darts talent.

However, in 2017, he faced a harrowing health ordeal when he had to undergo the amputation of his right foot due to a severe infection.

Sadly, he had to undergo a second amputation in 2022, this time of the lower part of his left leg.

The passing of Toon Greebe has left a void in the darts community, but his legacy will live on in the memories of fans and players who were fortunate to witness his extraordinary career.
