A Birmingham Origin and Musical Genesis

Anthony Michael Clarkin was born and raised in the Shard End area of Birmingham, a region that birthed numerous bands associated with the ‘Brum Beat’ label. From his early days, Clarkin’s affinity for music was evident. Leaving school to pursue a career as a ladies’ hairdresser, he soon veered into the realm of music by joining his first band, The Boulevards, alongside former school friends.

Magnum: The Birth of a Rock Legacy (1972–1995)

Magnum’s inception took place as the house band at Birmingham’s Rum Runner nightclub in 1972. However, it wasn’t until the association with manager Keith Baker that the band achieved breakthrough success. Albums like “On a Storyteller’s Night” (1985), “Wings of Heaven” (1988), and “Goodnight L.A.” (1990) solidified Magnum’s place in the rock pantheon. Clarkin’s songwriting prowess and the band’s collaboration with Queen drummer Roger Taylor marked defining moments in their illustrious career.

Hard Rain and Solo Ventures (1995–2001)

Post-Magnum, Clarkin joined forces with Magnum vocalist Bob Catley to form Hard Rain. Despite the challenges faced by the spin-off group, they released albums like “Hard Rain” and “When The Good Times Come.” Clarkin’s versatility as a songwriter remained evident during this period.

Magnum Reunion and Ongoing Triumphs (2001–2024)

The early 2000s witnessed the resurrection of Magnum, with the release of “Breath of Life” in 2002. Clarkin, alongside Catley and other talented musicians, continued to create music that resonated with fans. Albums like “Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow” (2007) and “Lost on the Road to Eternity” (2018) showcased the enduring creativity of the Magnum collective.

A Farewell to a Guitar Virtuoso

The news of Tony Clarkin’s rare spinal condition and subsequent cancellation of Magnum’s Spring 2024 tour saddened fans across the globe. On 7 January 2024, the world lost a musical maestro as Magnum announced Clarkin’s passing on their Facebook page. He was 77.

In a statement, the Clarkin family expressed their profound sadness, highlighting Tony’s musical legacy and his love for animals. The family intends to establish a charitable trust in his name to further a cause close to his heart.
