Tom Pidcock Parents: Meet Sonja Harper and Giles Pidcock

Behind the scenes of Tom’s remarkable journey, his roots in the sport can be traced back to the unwavering support and passion for cycling instilled by his parents, Sonja Harper and Giles Pidcock.

Growing up with his parents and younger brother Joe, Tom’s introduction to cycling was inevitable with both Sonja and Giles being avid cyclists themselves. At the tender age of three, Tom hopped onto a bike and swiftly fell in love with the sport, marking the beginning of a lifelong connection.

While Tom was born and raised in the north of England, his initial cycling experiences unfolded on the paths surrounding the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome in London, one of the world’s oldest velodromes.

Tom’s bond with his bike deepened as he explored every possible surface, even earning a scolding for daring wheelies in the school playground. Tom’s journey into competitive cycling commenced at the age of seven at the Castle Combe track in southwest England.

Despite a less-than-auspicious start marked by a slipped chain and a less-than-stellar finish, his determination to become a professional cyclist was already evident. At the age of 10, Tom decided to elevate his training regimen, cycling laps around the school playing fields before classes and persuading his parents to drive him to events.

Initially hesitant to push their son too hard at such a young age, Sonja and Giles eventually supported Tom’s burgeoning talent, accompanying him to national-level races. Tom’s first significant victory occurred at the British National Youth Road Series in Scarborough, where his prowess as a hill climber began to surface.

As Tom’s talent continued to shine, his parents witnessed his passion evolve into an impressive career. With notable achievements across road, track, MTB, and cyclo-cross disciplines at the youth and U23 levels, Tom secured wins at national, European, and world levels. His elite-level national cyclo-cross title at the British Championships in Gravesend, Kent in 2019 marked a pivotal moment in his ascent.
