Born on August 20, 1973, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Todd Helton’s early introduction to the world of baseball can be traced back to his father, Jerry Helton.

Jerry had a stint as a catcher in the Minnesota Twins organization during 1968 and 1969, offering a glimpse into the familial ties that connected Todd to the sport. Tragically, Jerry Helton passed away at the age of 65 on March 7, 2015, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond the baseball diamond.

In a poignant reflection on his upbringing, Todd Helton recalled the formative years when his father played an instrumental role in nurturing his passion for hitting. Jerry’s garage served as an impromptu training ground, where he taught a young Todd the art of batting.

Using a tee ingeniously crafted from a washing-machine hose, Jerry laid the foundation for what would evolve into an illustrious baseball career. Todd reminisced, “He taught me how to hit in our garage, batting off a tee he made from a washing-machine hose. I was 5.”

Jerry Helton and his wife, Lynda Courville Helton, were parents to three children—Todd, brother Rodney, and sister Melissa (Missy). The familial bonds extended beyond the realm of baseball, creating a nurturing environment that fueled Todd’s growth both as an athlete and an individual.

Beyond the baseball field, Todd Helton’s interests included a deep love for hunting, a passion that he shared with his maternal grandfather, Don Courville. The youthful excursions into the world of duck hunting with his grandfather added another layer to Todd’s multifaceted personality.
