Toby Yates, a prominent Hollywood film editor with a four-decade career and the son of the Oscar-nominated producer and director Peter Yates, has passed away at the age of sixty-one.

Yates’s family announced his demise on November 17 in Los Angeles, citing complications from a stroke as the cause.

Renowned for his editing expertise, Yates collaborated with director Karen Moncrieff on several projects, including her debut feature, Blue Car (2002), as well as The Dead Girl (2006) and The Trials of Cate McCall (2013). His portfolio also includes editing credits for The Moon and the Stars (2007), a film by John Irvin that earned him the Best Editor Award at the Milano International Film Festival. Additionally, he contributed his editing skills to The Midnight Meat Train (2008) and No One Lives (2012), directed by Ryûhei Kitamura.

Notably, Yates’s final editing project was Brave the Dark (2023), directed by Damian Harris.

Born on September 18, 1962, in London, Toby Robert Quentin Yates spent his formative years in both London and New York City. During high school, he delved into cinema and editing studies, apprenticing and later working as an assistant editor under Roy Lovejoy, known for his work on films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Aliens.

After completing his studies at Saratoga Springs, New York’s Skidmore College, where he received the inaugural MTV Student Award for directing, Yates continued his cinematic pursuits at Columbia University School of Arts. Following his academic endeavors, he ventured into stage direction in Los Angeles and London.

Yates made his mark in the film industry by editing Cleopatra’s Second Husband, his debut independent film, and Brown’s Requiem (1998), an adaptation of James Ellroy’s first novel. His contributions to the world of cinema and his impactful collaborations with various directors stand as a testament to his enduring legacy in Hollywood.
