Tina Howe, who was up in New York City in a family of authors, creates plays that push the boundaries of dramatic structure while expressing her self-described “obsession” with the visual arts. Although characters in these plays are frequently artists, their concerns are with the integration of art and ordinary life, and their themes center on the renewal and regeneration that can only be found in children’s play and art.

Howe spent a year in Paris after receiving her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College (where she also wrote her first play), where she “wrote around the clock…and the infatuation began.” She returned and attended Chicago Teachers College and Columbia Teachers College to obtain her teaching certification before starting to teach high school in Monona Grove, Wisconsin and Bath, Maine.

Playwright Tina Howe passed away on Monday at the age of 85 from natural causes at New York Presbyterian Allen Hospital after suffering complications from getting sick, collapsing, and breaking her hip.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Howe was best known for her works Painting Churches and Coastal Disturbances and was twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
