Barber was chosen by the Giants in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft, where he played his entire professional career. Barber, the Giants’ all-time top rusher and receiver, announced his retirement from the NFL at the conclusion of the 2006 postseason. Barber was admitted to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Barber majored in business while receiving financial aid to attend the University of Virginia. Barber not only excelled as a student-athlete but also broke the long jump record at the University of Virginia on his first attempt and contributed to the resurgence of the school’s football team.
In his junior season, Barber ran for about 1,400 yards, which assisted the Cavaliers in sharing the ACC title. In his senior year, he racked up more than 1,300 yards on the ground, winning ACC Player of the Year honors.

James and Geraldine Barber are the parents of Barber. At Virginia Tech, James was a standout running back who eventually competed in the World Football League. Barber’s parents split up when he was very young, and during his childhood, his father hardly ever saw his sons and never gave them any financial support. On May 15, 1999, Barber wed Virginia Cha Barber, his college love. The pair lived in the Upper East Side of New York City, with Cha’s parents sharing an en suite.
