De Decker’s journey in the world of cycling began with various amateur teams in 2016. His talent quickly became evident, and he secured notable achievements such as a second-place finish in the Omloop der Vlaamse Gewesten in 2018. The following year, he clinched the eighth position in the time trial at the Belgian National Championships for juniors. Notably, he also secured a fifth-place finish in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad for juniors that same year.

Throughout 2020 and 2021, De Decker represented ACROG-Tormans, but victories remained elusive during this period. However, his determination paid off in 2022 when he secured an impressive eighth-place finish in the Belgian National Championships time trial for the U23 category. He continued to impress, finishing eighth in the Heusden Koers 2022, a race that featured professional cyclists. Additionally, he secured two second-place finishes in stages of the Ronde van Vlaams-Brabant and the Ronde van Namen.
The year 2023 marked a turning point for De Decker’s career. He started the year on a high note, winning the third stage of the Tour of Taiwan. However, his greatest triumph came two months later at the U23 Paris-Roubaix. The grueling race, known as the “Hell of the North,” saw De Decker cross the finish line first, securing a monumental victory. He shared the podium with fellow Belgians Gil Gelders and Robin Orins.

De Decker’s prowess extended beyond Paris-Roubaix, as he achieved impressive results in other classics. He secured a fourth-place finish in both the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Eschborn-Frankfurt races, along with a third-place finish in Brussel-Opwijk.
A Tragic End
On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, tragedy struck as De Decker was involved in a collision with a car during a training session. The accident resulted in severe injuries, causing him to lose a significant amount of blood and fall into a coma. He was initially taken to the Heilig-Hartziekenhuis in Lier and later transferred to the University Hospital of Antwerp. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Tijl De Decker succumbed to his injuries on August 25, 2023, leaving the cycling community and his fans devastated.
