Thích Nhất Hạnh was a Vietnamese Thiền Buddhist monk, peace activist, and founder of the Plum Village Tradition (the main inspiration for engaged Buddhism).

Thich Nhat Hanh was born on October 11, 1926, in Hue, Vietnam to parents, Nguyễn Đình Phúc and Trần Thị Dĩ. He was the second-youngest of six children, with three older brothers, an elder sister, and a younger brother.
Thich Nhat Hanh was a graduate of Báo Quốc Buddhist Academy in Central Vietnam. He studied at the Princeton Theological Seminary and was subsequently appointed lecturer in Buddhism at Columbia University.
On May 1, 1966, at Từ Hiếu Temple, Thich Nhat Hanh received the “lamp transmission” from Zen Master Chân Thật, making him a dharmacharya (teacher).

Thich Nhat Hanh was the spiritual head of the Từ Hiếu Pagoda and associated monasteries and had spent most of his later life at the Plum Village Monastery in southwest France near Thénac travelling internationally to give retreats and talks.

How Did Thich Nhat Hanh Die?
Thich Nhat Hanh died at Từ Hiếu Temple in Huế, Vietnam, at 00:00hrs on 22 January 2022, at the age of 95. He had earlier experienced a severe brain haemorrhage in November 2014, for which he had undergone rehabilitation.
