Born on November 18, 1971, at Billinge Hospital in Greater Manchester, to her parents Tom Coffey and Alice George, Thérèse’s formative years were spent in Liverpool. Her educational journey began at St Mary’s College, Crosby, followed by St Edward’s College in Liverpool.
It was evident early on that she held a passion for academia, leading her to Somerville College, Oxford, in pursuit of a degree in chemistry in 1989. However, her time at Oxford presented challenges, and in 1991, she encountered academic hurdles that required her to withdraw from the college due to unsatisfactory examination results.

Unfazed by this setback, Thérèse Coffey redirected her academic path, enrolling at University College London, where she successfully obtained a BSc degree in chemistry with upper second-class honors in 1993. She furthered her academic achievements by earning a PhD in chemistry in 1998.
Post-graduation, her professional journey encompassed diverse roles, notably with Mars Incorporated, where she served in various capacities, including as the finance director for Mars Drinks UK. Her career also saw her contributing her expertise as the Property Finance Manager at the BBC.
Family has been an integral part of Coffey’s life. She shares a close bond with her mother, Alice George, and sister. Notably, her sister Clare has been a part of her professional journey, working in Thérèse’s parliamentary office as a secretary since 2015, highlighting the importance of familial connections in her career.
