Luis Vasquez’s story began in Los Angeles, California, where he was born to a Cuban immigrant mother and a Mexican father who was absent from his life. At the age of nine, the family relocated to Victorville, California, immersing Vasquez in the unique atmosphere of the Mojave Desert. It was during his teenage years that Vasquez first embraced punk rock, drawing inspiration from iconic bands like Descendents, Bad Religion, Bad Brains, Fugazi, and Minor Threat.

After completing his education at Hesperia High School, Vasquez’s journey led him to Oakland, California, where he would embark on a musical odyssey that would captivate listeners worldwide.

The Birth of The Soft Moon
In 2009, Vasquez birthed The Soft Moon—a solo project that would redefine the sonic landscape. Brooklyn-based label Captured Tracks recognized the innovative potential within Vasquez’s creations, leading to a record deal. The debut singles, “Breathe The Fire” and “Parallels,” released on 7″ vinyl in 2010, marked the emergence of The Soft Moon’s enigmatic sound.

The self-titled debut album followed in the same year, setting the stage for a remarkable journey of sonic exploration. The band embarked on a tour in 2011, sharing the stage with Interpol and Mogwai, solidifying their presence in the music scene.
Challenges and Triumphs
Vasquez faced challenges on his creative path, including a harrowing incident in 2012 when he was robbed at gunpoint in his Oakland neighborhood. Undeterred, he channeled these experiences into his music, relocating to Venice, Italy, to write his third album, “Deeper,” released in 2015. The album’s lead single, “Black,” earned accolades from Pitchfork, further establishing The Soft Moon’s reputation for pushing boundaries.
Throughout the years, Vasquez and The Soft Moon encountered setbacks, from a canceled tour with Killing Joke in 2016 to a van break-in during a performance in Oakland. Despite these trials, Vasquez’s dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to his art remained unshaken.
A Final Chapter: Exister
The journey of The Soft Moon reached its final chapter with the release of the fifth and last album, “Exister,” on September 23, 2022. The band continued to share their sonic vision with performances at notable events like the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, in April 2023, and the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, California, in May 2023.
