The Sandman: Who is Johanna Constantine?

Johanna Constantine in The Sandman on Netflix is an ancestor of the more well-known  DC superhero John Constantine, who is closely associated with the fictional universe’s magical side.

Johanna Constantine first appears in The Sandman’s third episode. The Sandman series sparked outrage when complaints arose that the character of John Constantine had been gender-flipped.

The fan theories are endless: Some fans accused the show of “woke casting,” pointing to other gender-swapped characters, while others assumed there were rights issues with John Constantine because he is currently used in other DCEU properties.

However, Johanna Constantine is a different character, related to but different from the infamous Master of the Dark Arts.

Johanna Constantine, like John Constantine, is a magician, albeit not a particularly powerful one.

While Johanna appears to be less adept at using magic than John, based on the few stories she’s been in, she is far better trained than him in most other areas. “The Sandman” is available for streaming exclusively on Netflix.
