Sheik was the only Persian WWE champion, having won the WWF World Heavyweight Title in 1983.
Sheik began his wrestling career as an amateur and tried to qualify for the 1968 Olympics before relocating to the United States and acting as an assistant coach for the US wrestling team at the 1972 Olympics.
Sheik debuted in professional wrestling in 1972 with the Minnesota-based AWA, and he got his first chance with WWE in 1979.

Sheik joined WWE full-time in 1983 and defeated Bob Backlund for the WWE Championship on December 26, 1983, in Madison Square Garden in New York City, ending Backlund’s reign of 2,135 days, the second-longest in WWE title history.

While Sheik would never win another singles title in WWE, he was a part of the first title change in WrestleMania history when he and Nikolai Volkoff defeated Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo of The U.S. Express for the WWE Tag Team Championships at the first WrestleMania in 1985.
Sheik was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
In more recent years, Sheik became known for his social media presence, as his Twitter account garnered over 600,000 followers.
Sheik’s account became an internet sensation due to its unique musings, profane language and disdain for Hogan, the man who beat him for the WWE Championship.
Caryl J. Peterson, his wife of nearly five decades, and their two children, Nikki Vaziri and Tanya Vaziri, survive him.
In May 2003, his first daughter, Marissa Jeanne Vaziri, was slain by her boyfriend, Charles Warren Reynolds. She was 26 at the time.
