When DJ Premier originally shared the news of James’ passing on Instagram, he noted that it had occurred three days after his 62nd birthday. James’ passing was confirmed to Rolling Stone by the producer’s representative Paul Martinez, who did not provide a cause of death.

Producers that DJ Mark The 45 King has worked with include MC Lyte, Craig Mack, and Rakim. He has also remixed songs for Madonna, Public Enemy, Lisa Stansfield, Salt-N-Pepa, and Eric B. & Rakim. His departure was verified to Variety by a representative on Thursday; the cause of death was not disclosed.
