Tetsuya Yamagami: Shinzo Abe Shooting Suspect, Who Is He?

The man who shot former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe has been identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, who is believed to be a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.

He was believed to be standing behind Shinzo Abe, 10 feet away, when he fired at him. Shinzo collapsed on stage in the middle of his speech. Yamagami was tackled to the ground by security as he did not try to run away.

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving former prime minister, was shot during a campaign speech in one of the most significant acts of political violence in the postwar era.

According to the state broadcaster, Shinzo was shot twice in the neck and left collarbone around 11:30 am local time in the Western city of Nara. The shooting of Shinzo shocked a society where violence is rare and only a handful of people own guns.
