Midway through his four-decade-long wrestling career, which began in the middle of the 1960s, Mr. Funk traveled the nation and the world, performing for W.W.E. before sold-out crowds and then providing entertainment for All Japan fans in the rapidly expanding Japanese wrestling market.

He gained notoriety as a tough wrestler who used a variety of makeshift weapons against opponents, including chairs and ladders, barbed wire and bats, trash cans, and fire.
He visited World Championship Wrestling in 1989, where he would face Mr. Flair in one of his most renowned career matches.
