Tarkwa Court Sentences Teacher to 18 Years in Jail for Abusing 13-Year-Old Student

A teacher convicted of defiling his 13-year-old student in Attakrom, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, has been sentenced to 18 years in hard labor by the Tarkwa Circuit Court.

Benjamin Hanson, the convict, initially pleaded not guilty to the offense. However, after a full trial, he was found guilty and convicted accordingly.

According to Superintendent of Police Juliana Essel-Dadzie, prosecuting, the complainant, who is the victim’s mother, and both resided in Nsuaem.

The victim, a 13-year-old Junior High School form one student attending school in Nsuaem, was taught Carrier Technology and Computing by Hanson.

On Sunday, March 12, 2023, the victim visited Hanson in his house at Attakrom, where he had sexual intercourse with her. She left for her house afterward but did not inform anyone.

On Friday, March 31, 2023, the victim paid another visit to Benjamin Hanson, the teacher, but was spotted by someone acquainted with the victim’s sister. This individual promptly informed the sister that Hanson was engaging in an inappropriate relationship with the victim.

Upon learning of this, the victim’s sister informed her parents, who confronted the victim about the situation. The victim admitted to the affair when questioned by her parents.

Subsequently, the victim’s parents took action by arresting Hanson and handing him over to the Nsuaem police. They lodged a formal complaint against him, leading to his arrest and subsequent investigation.

During the investigation, Hanson confessed to having engaged in sexual relations with the victim. He claimed to have proposed love to her, alleging that she had agreed to the relationship.

Following the investigation, Hanson was charged with the offense of defilement of a female under sixteen years and arraigned.
