The coastal region of the East African nation has been particularly hard-hit, with floods wreaking havoc on thousands of farms, stated Mobhare Matinyi, the government spokesperson, in a statement released on Sunday, 14th April, 2024.

“Serious flood effects are experienced in the coast region where 11 people have so far died,” Matinyi added.

The toll from the flooding stands at 58 deaths across the country, as reported by Matinyi.

Tragedy struck last Friday when eight schoolchildren perished after their bus plunged into a flooded gorge in the northern part of Tanzania.

April marks the height of Tanzania’s rainy season, and this year has witnessed some of the most intense rainfall in recent memory.

Neighbouring Kenya has also been affected by the deluge, with at least 13 fatalities and around 15,000 people displaced, according to the United Nations.

Weather experts attribute the severity of this year’s rainy season to the El Niño weather phenomenon, exacerbating the already challenging conditions.
