A 12-year-old student was killed in a shooting at a South Carolina middle school on Thursday, and authorities arrested a classmate, also 12, as a suspect shortly after police arrived.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, more than 100 officers responded to Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville to help identify the shooter. The school’s resource officer requested backup at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis said a 12-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. The sheriff’s office later confirmed the boy’s death on Facebook.

According to the sheriff’s office, another 12-year-old student was apprehended near campus shortly after the report was made. Deputies later discovered that he had left the school immediately following the shooting.
Deputies received a tip that the boy might be at a nearby residence, and they later discovered him hiding under a deck there. As he was being taken into custody, a handgun was discovered.
According to the sheriff’s office, he was arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm on school property, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a minor.
The motive for the shooting, as well as how the shooter obtained the gun, are still being investigated.
