Sylvana Simons Parents: Meet Wilfred Leeuwin, Roline Yvonne Kerk

Sylvana Simons, the Surinamese-born Dutch politician and former television presenter, has a personal history marked by resilience and determination.

Born on 31 January 1971 in the Surinamese capital of Paramaribo, Sylvana is the daughter of Wilfred Hugo Leeuwin and Roline Yvonne Kerk.

Sylvana’s upbringing was unique, shaped by a large and blended family. Despite her father and mother having fifteen children and one child, respectively, from previous relationships, Sylvana was raised without her siblings.

The family made the significant move to the Netherlands when Sylvana was just one and a half years old, settling in the Amsterdam neighborhoods of Kinkerbuurt and Osdorp.

In terms of profession, Sylvana’s father, Wilfred Hugo Leeuwin, worked as a bookkeeper for an insurance company. On the other hand, her mother, Roline Yvonne Kerk, was employed by IBM. This diverse and hardworking background laid the foundation for Sylvana’s journey in later years.

However, Sylvana’s teenage years were marked by challenges and a move toward independence. At the age of fourteen, she left her parents’ house following a disagreement with her father’s rules.

Initially staying with her half-sister in Amsterdam, Sylvana later found herself in a youth shelter and lodging with assistance. Tragically, Sylvana experienced the loss of her father, who died by suicide in 1996. This event undoubtedly had a profound impact on her life and perspectives.
