Sudan’s military leader, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has made it clear that the army “will not hand over the authority of our state to any internal or external party.”

Addressing worshipers after Eid al-Fitr prayers in central Gedaref state, Gen. Burhan emphasized that only those who have stood against injustice and violations will have a role in the country’s future governance, according to the state news agency Suna.

He stated firmly that discussions about the return of democratic rule will not take place until the ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, is resolved.

The military has garnered support from Islamist parties that held sway during the presidency of Omar al-Bashir, ousted in April 2019.

Mediated talks between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, with involvement from the US and Saudi Arabia, are expected to resume in Jeddah following Eid.

In an audio message on his social media account to mark Eid al-Fitr, RSF leader Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, declared that “there is no other option for the Rapid Support Forces but victory.”

Hemedti also vowed to prosecute any member of his forces who commits violations against innocent citizens and instructed his forces to show zero tolerance toward any outlaw threatening citizen stability.
