Notably, Attwell was part of the Select Group of referees for the 2008–09 season, a recognition that granted him the opportunity to officiate in the Premier League. His promotion to the top flight of English football was solidified on 25 June 2008, making him the youngest-ever Premier League referee at the age of 25. On 23 August 2008, he made his Premier League debut by officiating a 1–1 draw between Blackburn Rovers and Hull City.

While his career highlights have been significant, Attwell also faced challenges. Notably, he and his assistant, Nigel Bannister, were at the center of a “ghost goal” controversy during a Championship game in September 2008. Despite challenges, Attwell’s dedication to self-improvement and growth shone through.

His international journey was also marked by unique experiences. In July 2010, Attwell took part in Japanese J. League matches as part of a referee exchange program, further highlighting his global impact on the sport.
