The couple got married on January 2, 1971. They have three children. Naomi, Owen and Joseph King. Both of the Kings’ sons are authors.
Tabitha King is currently the vice president of the radio stations WZON/WZLO/WKIT. She had published eight novels and two works of nonfiction as of 2006. She has served on a number of boards and committees in Maine, including the Bangor Public Library board.
For her work promoting literacy in Maine, she earned the inaugural Constance H. Carlson Public Humanities Prize in 1998, the Maine Humanities Council’s highest honour.

King and his wife are major philanthropists. Every year, he provides approximately $4 million to libraries, schools, arts organisations, and local fire departments in need of updated lifesaving equipment such as the Jaws of Life.
The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, founded by King and his wife, is the sixth-largest charity in Maine, with an annual gift totaling more than $2.8 million.
In November 2011, King’s foundation provided $70,000 in matching cash to help households in Bangor, Maine, pay their heating expenses. The charity provided $6,500 in February 2021 to help Farwell Elementary School students in Lewiston, Maine, publish two novels.
