He is the son of Donald Edwin King and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. His father, Donald Edwin King was a traveling vacuum salesman after returning from World War II
On July 23, 1939, King’s parents married in Scarborough, Maine. They briefly stayed with Donald’s family in Chicago before relocating to Croton-on-Hudson, New York.

His parents returned to Maine near the end of WWII, settling in Scarborough in a small house. King is of Scots and Irish ancestry. King’s father abandoned the family when he was two years old. His mother raised him and his older brother David on her alone, sometimes under difficult financial circumstances.
King’s family relocated to Durham, Maine, when he was 11 years old, where his mother cared for her parents until their deaths. She afterwards worked as a carer in a nearby mentally challenged residential facility.
