Specs Howard, a radio pioneer who spent three decades entertaining audiences in Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan has died. He was born on April 8, 1926 and died September 3, 2022 at age 96.

Howard’s death was announced by his daughter Alisa Zee, via the statement;

I am heartbroken to let you know that in the early hours this morning, Saturday, September 3, 2022, my father Specs Howard completed his journey here on Earth.

He was always grateful to the entire media community. He felt your embrace every step of his professional journey, knowing that his mission to help change lives for the better was supported and guided by all.

To everyone who ever listened to him on the air, graduated from the Specs Howard School, hired the people he trained or even just said nice things to or about Dad, the entire Specs Howard Family says, ‘Thank You.’

Alisa Zee, Spec Howard’s daughter

Specs Howard (born Julian “Jerry” Liebman) achieved notice as one of the members of the Martin and Howard Show in Cleveland during the 1960s before moving to Detroit.

Specs Howard created the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield, Michigan and since the school’s inception in 1970, thousands of people have graduated and gone on to have successful radio and television broadcasting careers.

In late 2009, the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts became the Specs Howard School of Media Arts due to the addition of graphic design and film courses.

His name “Specs” was reportedly taken for his wearing of glasses, and “Howard” randomly out of a phone book.
