The electric chair is one of the most painful and gruesome ways of execution. In 1890, an electric chair was devised as an alternative to hanging and was utilised for the first time. However, as humanity has progressed, we have realised that the electric chair is no better than other methods of execution, such as hanging or shooting.

This is why the electric chair is either prohibited or listed as a backup option. Only a few states allow it to be used under certain situations. Currently, lethal injection is the chosen method of execution.

Heat is generated while electricity travels through a person. There have been reports of prisoners’ bodies catching fire in electric chairs. The eyeballs may melt or explode out of the head as a result of the intense heat. This is why, before being executed by an electric chair, prisoners had their eyes strapped.

Coroners must wait for the body to cool before performing an autopsy. This is because the body heats up significantly following an electric chair execution. Internal bodily components may be hot enough to give blisters to anyone who comes into contact with them.
