Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the son of the late Chadian president Idris Deby Itno, has emerged as the winner of the presidential election to succeed his father.

The former military figure, now turned politician, secured victory in the first round of voting, capturing 61.03% of the votes, as announced by the election management body.
The results, proclaimed on Thursday, May 9, 2024, three days after the May 6 vote, solidified Mahamat’s position as the new leader of Chad.

His main opponent, Success Masra, garnered 18.53% of the votes. However, the opposition has contested the outcome, alleging instances of fraud.
Mahamat’s ascension to power follows the death of his father in 2001, who perished on the frontlines combating terrorism.
Since then, Mahamat had served as interim president, now transitioning into the role permanently through electoral victory.
