Before switching to rugby union, Kata played rugby league for the New Zealand Warriors, had a deal with the Melbourne Storm in the NRL, and also represented Tonga and New Zealand internationally.

By joining with the New Zealand Warriors in 2013, Kata transitioned to rugby league. When the Penrith Panthers defeated the Warriors in the grand final, 30-42, Kata was a member of the team that competed in the Holden Cup competition. Kata participated in the 2014 Auckland Nines with the first-grade team before switching back to the under-20s league.
