Prior to relocating to Auckland, Solomone Funaki attended Liahona High School in Tonga. There, he played club rugby for Grammar TEC. He was chosen for the Auckland Colts team in the same year.

At the 2014 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in Hong Kong, Funaki represented and led the Tonga U20 team. For an Anzac Day encounter against the New Zealand Universities team in 2017, Funaki was selected for the Bay of Plenty Wasps team.

In 2018, Funaki relocated to Hawke’s Bay and joined the Maori Agricultural College (MAC) Sports Association, where he played club rugby. He was a full squad member for the Magpies in 2019, however owing to two broken wrists, he was unable to play in any of the Mitre 10 Cup matches.
