Funaki represented Tonga’s U20 team and served as captain in Hong Kong for the 2014 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy. Funaki was selected to play for the Bay of Plenty Wasps in a 2017 Anzac Day match against the New Zealand Universities squad.

Funaki relocated to Hawke’s Bay in 2018 and participated in the Maori Agricultural College (MAC) Sports Association’s club rugby team. He was a full squad member for the Magpies in 2019, although he missed the entire Mitre 10 Cup because of two fractured wrists.
