Following initial reports of his “life-threatening” condition, the Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba stated that he is “not in a life-threatening situation at this moment,” and “is expected to survive.”
The prime minister was greeting supporters at an event when the attempted assassination occurred, shocking the small country and sending ripples of concern across Europe just weeks before an election.

According to Defense Minister Robert Kalina, doctors fought for Fico’s life for several hours after the 59-year-old pro-Russian leader was struck in the abdomen.

The incident took place outside a cultural center in the town of Handlova, nearly 140 kilometers northeast of the capital, during a meeting of his government in the town known for its coal mining history.
A suspect is in custody, and initial investigations suggest “a clear political motivation” behind the assassination attempt, stated Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok during a briefing alongside the defense minister.
Outgoing President Zuzana Caputova, a political rival of Fico, condemned the attack, stating, “A physical attack on the prime minister is, first of all, an attack on a person, but it is also an attack on democracy. Any violence is unacceptable. The hateful rhetoric we’ve been witnessing in society leads to hateful actions. Please, let’s stop it.”
