After signing with Sussex Records, Sixto Rodriguez released the 1967 single “I’ll Slip Away” as Rod Riguez, followed by two studio albums, “Cold Fact” (1970) and “Coming from Reality” (1971).
Rodriguez was released by the label and later quit music because the albums did not sell well in the United States. Unbeknownst to Sixto, his music became highly famous and profitable in South Africa and Australia in the 1990s.
At one point in time, he was possibly more famous than Elvis Presley in South Africa. Sixto’s life was the subject of the 2012 documentary “Searching for Sugar Man,” which won an Academy Award and over 40 other honours. Sixto’s two studio albums were reissued in 2012 and charted in Denmark, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand.
