Shettima Mustapha, a Nigerian academic and politician who served as Minister of Agriculture (1990–1992), and in 2007 served as Minister of Defense in the cabinet of President Umaru Yar’Adua has died. He was born on 26 November 1939 and died on 17 November 2022 at age 82, 9 days to his 83rd birthday.

Shettima Mustafa was appointed a commissioner in the Borno State government under Governor Mohammed Goni.
He rose steadily in the political ranks, becoming Vice-Presidential candidate on the Nigerian People’s Party platform in the 1983 election.

In 1985, two years after the military coup, he was jailed by General Muhammadu Buhari.
Followinmg his release, he returned to part-time teaching at the University of Maiduguri.
In 1990, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources until the cabinet dissolved in 1992.
He was also chair of the Presidential Visitation Panel tot he University of Agriculture in 1999.
In November 2000, he was appointed to the Order of the Federal Republic.
In 2002, he was nominated to the board of the Savannah Bank, although he was not a shareholder.
In 2004, he was chairman of the Presidential National Tree Nursery Development Committee.
