At the age of 10, Ann Barber, Shawnacy’s mother, divorced George, leading to Shawnacy relocating to New Caney, Texas, where he spent his adolescence. Growing up, Shawnacy split his time between the Toronto area and the United States, eventually graduating from Kingwood Park High School in Houston.
Despite the geographical distances, Shawnacy referred to Toronto as his hometown during competitions, emphasizing the importance of his Canadian heritage.
