Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, to his parents Ann and George Barber, Shawnacy’s journey unfolded with unique experiences that shaped his identity both as an athlete and an individual.

George Barber, Shawnacy’s father, had roots in Kincardine, Ontario, although he spent his formative years in El Paso, Texas. The family’s ties to both the United States and Canada were evident in Shawnacy’s early life.

At the age of 10, Ann Barber, Shawnacy’s mother, divorced George, leading to Shawnacy relocating to New Caney, Texas, where he spent his adolescence. Growing up, Shawnacy split his time between the Toronto area and the United States, eventually graduating from Kingwood Park High School in Houston.

Despite the geographical distances, Shawnacy referred to Toronto as his hometown during competitions, emphasizing the importance of his Canadian heritage. His decision to represent Canada on the international stage was not only driven by the significance of pole vaulting in the country but also by a desire to follow in the footsteps of his father.

George Barber, a former pole vaulter himself, had represented Canada at the 1983 World Championships and twice competed at Team Canada Summer Olympic trials. This familial connection to the sport influenced Shawnacy’s choice to carry the Canadian flag, honoring a legacy and contributing to the nation’s athletic achievements.

Tragically, on January 17, 2024, Shawnacy Barber passed away at his home in Kingwood, Texas, at the age of 29. His legacy, however, extends beyond the records he set on the pole vault runway. Shawnacy’s story is one of resilience, diversity, and embracing one’s true self, leaving an indelible mark on the world of athletics and beyond.
